There were a number of separated children who fled fighting in their homeland and took refuge alone at Ban Mae La and Ban Umpiem Temporary Shelters, without parental care. The authorities of both shelters were therefore made available boarding houses for the separated children, i.e., 16 boarding houses in Ban Mae La Temporary Shelters and 3 boarding houses in Ban Umpiem Temporary Shelter of Tha Song Yang and Phop Phra Districts, respectively, of Tak Province.
In July 2022, COERR Mae Sod organized competition in English and Mathematics for schoolchildren in these boarding houses in two levels: an in-house competiton and a cross-boarding house competition. The winners of the in-house competition will then participate in the cross-boarding house competition for final selected winners.
In Ban Mae La Temporary Shelter, an in-house competition was organized during July 11-12, 2022, in which 414 children of 219 females and 195 males participated.
In Ban Umpiem Temporary Shelter, an in-house competition was organized on July 1, 2022, for 41 participants of 19 females and 22 males.
Then winners from in-house boarding house, numbering 29, of 19 females and 10 males, joined the cross-boarding house competition on July 22, 2022.
The objectives of the activity were enabling children and youth to enhance their skill and capability through analytical and critical thinking as well as problem solving. It provided an opportunity for the children to exchange their knowledge and skills in English and Mathematics; leading to relationship and friendship among participants and audiences in the same boarding houses and others.
